The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on our world. We all know someone who lost the battle to this deadly virus, and this tragedy of lost lives should never be diminished. However, there is a silver lining in this crisis. Now more than ever, people are beginning to take an inventory of their personal health. Over 500,000 Americans die each year because of personal choices they make regarding lifestyle. If the coronavirus has taught us anything, my hope is that this crisis becomes a wake-up call to individuals taking ownership of their health. Diet and exercise are crucial to supporting a robust immune system, but recent research reveals that a daily dose of supplements can also be beneficial. Staying resilient against infection can be enhanced by adding these immune support products: Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Quercetin, Glutathione/NAC, Zinc, Melatonin, and Elderberry. 

Vitamin C

Vitamin C has long been recognized for its immune-boosting benefits. Vitamin C supports cell function in various immune cells, and it enhances our ability to fight infections. Studies reveal that Vitamin C supplements can reduce upper respiratory tract infections’ duration and severity, including the common cold. 

Vitamin D

We get a lot of Vitamin D from the sun, and that’s why I recommend regular vacations that allow you to get refreshed from the beautiful world that God created. Did you know that Vitamin D is essential for the health and function of your immune system? It helps our white blood cells fight off pathogens and decrease inflammation. 

Because our number one source of Vitamin D comes from the sun and not food, many people are deficient in this crucial vitamin. Risk factors for Vitamin D deficiency include:

  • Living in places with high pollution levels.
  • Living in cold weather areas.
  • Sunscreen use.
  • Not using supplements

Vitamin D deficiency can negatively impact the function of our immune system. One study reveals that low vitamin D levels are linked to an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infections, such as influenza and asthma. A study in 2019 found that taking Vitamin D supplements can significantly decrease your risk of respiratory infections. 

Quercetin

Quercetin is a lesser-known supplement, but its popularity has increased for its immune health benefits. More studies suggest that Quercetin can prevent and treat various diseases, including cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease. According to a 2016 survey of Quercetin’s properties, it is known for its anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, vasodilator effects, antiobesity, antihypercholesterolemic, and antiatherosclerotic activities.

Research also reveals that Quercetin offers antibacterial and antiviral properties. It has shown antibacterial effects against numerous strains of bacteria. These factors make it an optimal supplement for warding off infections and sickness. Also, Quercetin has shown itself to be a natural anti-histamine. This is good news for those who experience seasonal allergies.

Glutathione/NAC

NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) is crucial to the production of Glutathione. This is one of our body’s most important antioxidants. NAC can help treat the symptoms that accompany respiratory infections. They act as an antioxidant to replenish Glutathione levels in our lungs. This can reduce inflammation in the bronchial tubes and lung tissue. NAC also acts as an expectorant. Studies have revealed that NAC supplements can help those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Another study showed that NAC may help treat bronchitis symptoms by thinning the mucus that sits in bronchial tubes. The rate and intensity of wheezing, coughing, and respiratory attacks can be diminished by increasing Glutathione levels. 

Zinc

Zinc plays a pivotal role in immune cell development. Studies have revealed that zinc deficiency can significantly impact our immune system’s ability to function correctly. The end result is a higher risk of infection and disease. Zinc deficiency is widespread, and with studies showing that zinc supplements may protect against respiratory tract infections such as the common cold, spreading the word about zinc’s benefits is crucial. Melatonin

We’ve all heard that Melatonin supports sleep, but it also provides substantial benefits to our immune system. Researchers have recently discovered that Melatonin binds to NLRP3 inflammasomes, the key receptors associated with COVID-19’s attack on the lungs. By binding to these receptors first, Melatonin might be an aid in preventing significant lung damage. More research is still done, but the bottom line is that getting a good night’s sleep on a regular is critical to good health in a COVID and non-COVID world. Natural sleep aids that contain melatonin work for a lot of people.

Elderberry 

Elderberry is loaded with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Elderberry syrup has been used to remedy colds, flu, and bacterial sinus infections. Elderberry works by reducing swelling in the mucus membranes. Some studies have shown that elderberry extract can reduce the flu duration, which is why some believe it may also help the immune system against COVID-19 infection.
